Neck pain, stiffness, or headaches after a car wreck can make driving, working, and sleeping difficult. At Elite Family Chiropractic in West Ashley, Dr. Brad Gorski, DC, FSBT evaluates whiplash injuries, screens for associated concussion symptoms, and builds a care plan around your findings and recovery goals.

Whiplash Treatment in Charleston, SC

After a neck injury, you deserve a clear explanation of what may be causing your symptoms and what care makes sense. Dr. Brad Gorski starts with your history and examination, reviews relevant records, and determines whether conservative care, additional testing, or another provider’s evaluation is appropriate.

Whether your symptoms began recently or have continued after initial treatment, the goal is to help you move more comfortably and return to the activities that matter to you.

Understanding whiplash and neck sprain and strain injuries

Whiplash is a neck injury associated with a sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head and neck. It often follows a car wreck, but it can also occur during a fall or sports injury. The term describes how the injury happened; your evaluation helps determine which tissues may be involved.

Two common injury terms describe different tissues:

  • A cervical sprain affects a ligament, a band of connective tissue that connects bones and helps support a joint.

  • A cervical strain affects a muscle or tendon. Tendons attach muscles to bones.

A whiplash injury may involve more than one structure. Along with muscles and ligaments, the small facet joints, their surrounding capsules, discs, or nerves may need consideration. Tenderness or stiffness alone does not establish which tissue was injured.

Symptoms after a whiplash injury

Symptoms may begin immediately or develop over the hours following an injury. Common concerns include:

  • Neck pain, stiffness, or difficulty turning your head.

  • Headaches, including pain near the base of the skull.

  • Shoulder or upper back discomfort and muscle spasms.

  • Difficulty sleeping or tolerating your usual activities.

Tell your provider about arm pain, tingling, numbness, dizziness, balance changes, or difficulty concentrating. These symptoms can change what needs to be evaluated. New weakness or other emergency symptoms require urgent medical attention.

How Dr. Gorski evaluates and diagnoses whiplash

Your visit starts with how the injury occurred, when symptoms began, and what has changed in your daily life. Bring any emergency department records, imaging reports, and available images so Dr. Gorski can review the care you have already received.

The examination may include:

  • Neck movement, tenderness, and how symptoms respond to appropriate movements.

  • Strength, sensation, and reflexes to assess possible nerve involvement.

  • Questions about headaches, dizziness, memory, concentration, and other concussion symptoms.

  • A review of sleep, work demands, and the activities you are struggling to resume.

These findings help distinguish a neck sprain or strain from conditions that need a different approach. Imaging is selected to answer a clinical question. Many uncomplicated whiplash injuries do not require imaging. When indicated, X-rays, CT, or MRI provide different information about bones, discs, nerves, and other structures.

A normal X-ray does not rule out a neck sprain, muscle strain, or concussion. The diagnosis depends on the clinical assessment as a whole.

SpineCAMP and quantitative motion analysis

In selected adults, a specific question about spinal movement may warrant further assessment. When clinically indicated and safe after the initial injury evaluation, flexion-extension X-rays show the neck in forward- and backward-bending positions.

Dr. Gorski uses SpineCAMP to obtain quantitative measurements from appropriate spinal X-rays. The software measures features such as alignment, angular movement, and how far one vertebra moves relative to another. This adds measured information about individual spinal segments to the examination.

The findings may help guide activity recommendations, rehabilitation, or referral. They must be interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and other imaging. Image quality, positioning, and the amount of movement captured also affect interpretation.

Motion analysis does not directly show a torn ligament or diagnose a concussion. An unusual measurement alone does not establish the cause or timing of an injury. SpineCAMP is intended for skeletally mature adults age 18 and older, and motion studies are not a routine test for every whiplash patient.

Whiplash and concussion can occur together

The same event can injure the neck and cause a concussion. A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury and can result from a jolt to the body that rapidly moves the head and brain, even without a direct blow to the head.

Headaches, dizziness, sleep changes, and difficulty concentrating can overlap with symptoms from a neck injury. Light or noise sensitivity, nausea, memory changes, or feeling mentally slowed down also deserve attention. Symptoms alone do not reliably separate these conditions.

Dr. Gorski’s evaluation includes screening for possible concussion symptoms and determining when further medical assessment is needed. When findings warrant it, he coordinates with clinicians who manage concussion, including neurology or rehabilitation providers.

Care for an accompanying neck injury can be part of the overall plan. Concussion assessment, recovery guidance, and decisions about returning to driving, work, or sports need their own clinical attention.

Whiplash treatment and recovery

Your plan depends on the diagnosis, examination findings, and how your symptoms affect daily life. Care may include:

  • Guidance on staying active and modifying tasks while symptoms settle.

  • Exercises to restore comfortable movement, strength, and endurance.

  • Selected manual treatment or chiropractic care when appropriate and safe for the findings.

  • Physical therapy or medical co-management when additional care is needed.

Manual treatment, when used, supports a broader recovery plan and is reassessed for benefit. Suspected fracture, significant instability, or a serious neurological problem requires further evaluation before neck manipulation is considered.

Pain relief and tissue recovery

Depending on your findings and stage of recovery, care may include a short trial of heat therapy, Class IV laser therapy, or interferential electrical stimulation to help manage discomfort. These options are used alongside appropriate movement and rehabilitation, with continued use based on measurable benefit.

Pain relief and tissue recovery do not always follow the same timeline. A muscle or tendon strain and a ligament or facet capsule sprain may recover differently depending on injury severity and other factors. Feeling better is encouraging, but returning to activity also considers movement, strength, endurance, and how the area tolerates daily demands.

Progress should show up in everyday activities: turning your head to check traffic, sleeping more comfortably, or getting through work with fewer limitations. Dr. Gorski reviews symptoms and function over time and adjusts care when progress stalls.

If pain continues to limit recovery, coordination with primary care, pain management, or a spine physician may help. Learn more about how chiropractic care and pain management can work together after whiplash.

Training that supports your injury evaluation

Brad Gorski, DC, FSBT, has completed a Fellowship in Spinal Biomechanics and Trauma. His postgraduate education includes spinal injury evaluation, MRI interpretation review, and head trauma and brain injury topics.

That background supports an approach centered on understanding the injury, deciding which care is appropriate, and recognizing when another clinician’s expertise is needed. Learn more about Dr. Gorski’s training and approach.

When symptoms need emergency care

Call 911 or seek emergency care after an injury if you develop a worsening severe headache, repeated vomiting, a seizure, increasing confusion, slurred speech, new arm or leg weakness, or difficulty staying awake. New difficulty walking after a neck injury also needs immediate assessment. These symptoms should not wait for a routine office appointment.

Whiplash questions

Can I have whiplash if my neck did not hurt right away?

Yes. Pain and stiffness can develop after the initial event. Tell your provider when symptoms started and how they have changed so that the timing becomes part of your assessment.

How long does whiplash recovery take?

Many people improve over several weeks to a few months, while others have symptoms for longer. Your progress, function, and examination guide the plan. Continued or worsening symptoms deserve reassessment rather than an automatic extension of the same treatment.

Will I need chiropractic adjustments?

Recommendations follow the assessment. Your plan may emphasize education, exercises, rehabilitation, or referral. If an adjustment is appropriate, Dr. Gorski can explain its purpose and discuss alternatives with you.

What if I already went to the emergency department?

Bring your discharge instructions and test results. Follow-up can address ongoing neck pain and activity limitations after emergency concerns have been assessed. New or worsening warning signs still require urgent medical reassessment.
